3-for-1 Bonus Hours for NSW Learner Drivers
The NSW Government’s 3-for-1 initiative lets learner drivers record triple time in their log book for each structured, 1-hour lesson with a NSW-licensed driving instructor. It’s a fast, legitimate way to build experience and reach your log book goal sooner.
How the 3-for-1 Works
- 1 hour structured lesson with a NSW-licensed instructor = 3 log book hours.
- Maximum bonus you can claim: 10 lessons counted at 3-for-1.
- That equals your 10 actual lesson hours + 20 bonus hours = 30 hours total.
- Night driving rule: if a lesson is at night, the bonus hours do not count toward your 20 required night hours (only the actual lesson hour counts as night).
- Lessons must be structured and follow the principles in your log book.
Quick Examples
- One 1-hour lesson logged as 3 hours (1 actual + 2 bonus).
- Ten 1-hour lessons logged as 30 hours (10 actual + 20 bonus – this is the cap on bonus hours).
Who’s Eligible?
- Learners taking structured lessons with a NSW-licensed driving instructor.
- 3-for-1 applies only when the instructor holds a NSW instructor licence (interstate-licensed instructors don’t qualify).
Logging Your Bonus Hours
- Paper log book: have the instructor record the lesson and bonus hours clearly.
- Roundtrip app: the official digital log book will automatically calculate 3-for-1 when you enter your instructor and lesson details.
Safer Drivers Course (Extra 20 Hours)
Separate from 3-for-1, completing the NSW Safer Drivers Course adds 20 bonus hours to your log book. Many learners combine 3-for-1 lessons with the course to reach the 120-hour target faster.
